The Brief: Remove the Building and Retain the Slab

A builder engaged Total Asbestos to carry out asbestos removal and demolition at Currimundi State School on the Sunshine Coast. The building contained non-friable asbestos infill panels that had to come out before mechanical demolition could begin. The concrete slab was to remain, and its removal was outside the scope, so the project needed a controlled sequence: panel removal, hygienist clearance, demolition, then handover of the retained slab.

Working Within the School Holiday Window

The work took place during the April 2026 school holidays. Meeting the builder’s program and finishing before students returned were the central requirements. Access was tight for the excavator and the large trucks, and other buildings sat close to the work area, so skilled operators manoeuvred the machinery and vehicles through the available space while temporary fencing kept the site separate from the surrounding school.

Removing the Asbestos Infill Panels

A seven-person asbestos removal crew removed approximately 1,000 square metres of non-friable asbestos infill panels. Air monitoring ran throughout the removal; Total Asbestos reports the results were below 0.01 fibres per millilitre. The panels were transported to BMI at Stapylton, and a hygienist issued clearance after the removal and before mechanical demolition began.

Mechanical Demolition With the Slab Retained

A five-person demolition crew used a 20-tonne excavator to take the building down. The existing slab was thick and stayed in place throughout. The team worked within the available access and the boundaries of the demolition area, removing the building while preserving the slab that was to remain. At handover, Total Asbestos reports the retained slab was in excellent condition.

A Clean Handover Ahead of Schedule

The combined asbestos removal and demolition took one week. Total Asbestos completed the work ahead of the builder’s agreed schedule and before students returned. The builder was happy with both the timing and the clean finish: asbestos panels and building gone, retained slab handed back in excellent condition.

Currimundi shows what school work demands: a hard deadline set by the term dates, tight access between occupied buildings, a structure to keep, and documentation the Department will ask for. One licensed team doing both the asbestos and the demolition is what keeps a one-week window from becoming two.
