Remote Asbestos Removal at Russell Island State School

Total Asbestos removed approximately 700 square metres of non-friable asbestos panels from two buildings at Russell Island State School. Preparing Two Buildings for Demolition

A demolition contractor engaged Total Asbestos to remove asbestos from two buildings at Russell Island State School before demolition. Total Asbestos removed the asbestos infill and sandwich panels, leaving the floors and remaining structures intact. Following the hygienist’s clearance, the demolition contractor brought in its own machinery and demolished the buildings.

Planning the Island Logistics

The project needed barge transport for the crew, the equipment and the waste. Total Asbestos planned these movements in advance, and the barge timetable caused no issue during delivery. Accommodation was arranged on Russell Island for the six-person crew, so the four-day program ran without daily travel to and from the mainland.

Removing the Asbestos Panels

The crew removed approximately 700 square metres of non-friable asbestos panels across the two buildings during the January school holidays. Air monitoring was carried out during removal; Total Asbestos reports the results were clear. A hygienist issued clearance before the buildings were handed over for demolition.

Transporting Waste to the Mainland

The asbestos waste was placed in Total Asbestos’s own skip bin, double-lined with black plastic, transported by barge to the mainland and then taken to BMI at Stapylton for disposal. Waste transport was planned alongside the crew and equipment movements as part of the overall island delivery arrangements.

An On-Time Handover

Total Asbestos completed the removal in four days and met the demolition contractor’s agreed deadline. The two companies work together regularly, and a timely handover is an established expectation of that relationship.

Russell Island shows what remote work comes down to: everything that normally arrives on a truck at 6:30 am has to be booked onto a barge, the crew has to sleep on the island, and the waste has to come back the same way. Plan those three things and a four-day job on an island runs like a four-day job in Brisbane.
