The Brief: Asbestos Removal Ahead of Re-roofing
Roof Pro engaged Total Asbestos to remove the asbestos roof from a government building in Maryborough. Roof Pro would then install the replacement roof, so the removal and the clearance were critical steps in the overall roofing program. The building was unoccupied while the removal took place. The Challenge: A Regional Job With a Firm Deadline
Alongside the roofing contractor’s deadline, the main logistical challenge was the distance from Total Asbestos’s Acacia Ridge base. Travel and on-site resources had to be coordinated so the whole removal fitted inside a two-day window.
Resourcing the Two-Day Removal
Total Asbestos deployed an eight-person crew, one supervisor and seven removalists, who stayed overnight in Maryborough between the two days rather than returning to Brisbane. A scissor lift provided access to the roof, and the work was organised around the agreed removal period and the hygienist’s attendance so the site could be handed over for the next stage.
Managing the Asbestos Work Area
An exclusion zone was set up with asbestos bunting and warning signage to restrict access, and the building stayed unoccupied throughout. Water kept the roofing wet to suppress dust as the sheets were removed. Air monitoring ran during the project; Total Asbestos reports the results were within limits and no further action was required.
Clearance Before Handover
The 730-square-metre roof removal was completed over two days. A hygienist attended to carry out clearance before Total Asbestos handed the site back to Roof Pro, who then carried out the re-roofing. Total Asbestos’s scope was the asbestos removal and handover; the replacement roof was Roof Pro’s.
